Learning through Play: Rotoy at Odense Robot and Science Festival
Vedrana
2 minutes
From the 24-26th of May, Rotoy attended the Robot and Science Festival in Odense. The festival offers young people the opportunity to discover more about how robots and drones work and their value. The event endorsed learning through play as children were able to play with robots, making it an interactive experience for families. Industry professionals hosted panel discussions where points of interest were explored. Furthermore, attendees could enjoy engaging conversations at the various booths around the festival. The concerts, live experiments, and street theatre all contributed to making it a fun and entertaining event for the whole family.
Rotoy Workshop
At our booth, our team stood ready to demonstrate our robot toy and how it teaches coding through storytelling. In addition to this, we had a workshop for the children in attendance. Harnessing their creativity and imagination, the workshop enabled them to build their own robots out of LEGO, clay, and buttons.
Playful Learning Panel
On Sunday, our Lead Designer, Octavia, was part of the Playful Learning panel, together with a representative from High5Girls, KUBO Robotics, and University College Lillebælt. The group held an excellent discussion about different teaching practices and ideas for developing 21st century skills in children. Practices like gamification and storytelling, where children are learning through play, facilitate the growth of such skill sets.
Furthermore, the panel also discussed gender disparity in the STEM field. Encouraging the development of 21st century skills, plus using technology in schools, can make the STEM field accessible to everyone. A particular topic of interest for the panelists was how the STEM subjects can nurture soft skills in children. These include teamwork, problem solving, and communication.
A Great Experience
It was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend at the Robot and Science Festival in Odense. We enjoyed connecting and sharing ideas with many like-minded individuals who are enthusiastic about robots and science.
Find out more about how our robot works through booking a coding workshop at contactus@rotoy.dk. Our workshops promote learning through play; children learn how to code a Rotoy robot through fun missions and storytelling on our web-platform. With easy-to-use block coding, they can teach the robot to dance, sing, and move around.
